What is a private key?

Updated over 2 weeks ago

How does your Sling Wallet work, and why does your private key matter?

Sling Money is built on the Solana blockchain, and your wallet is self-custody. That means you, and only you, control your funds.

Every wallet has two keys: a public key and a private key, like a mailbox. One’s for getting mail, the other’s for opening the box.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • Public Key:
This is your wallet’s public address, a long string of letters and numbers. It’s how people send you money, and it’s okay to share it. Think of it as your email address for crypto. Anyone can see it, but no one can use it to move your funds.

  • Private Key:
This is the real deal. It’s the secret code that gives full access to your wallet. Whoever holds this key can move your money. That’s why you should never share your private key with anyone, not even us. If someone else gets it, they can drain your wallet.

We understand that handling keys can be intimidating, so we’ve developed tools and partnered with trusted technology providers to help you manage them safely.
